Real or Pretend?

Very young children believe completely in fairies because they are as likely to be real as any other creature they learn about.  A bear, a giant furry bear, how likely is that, or a swan, or an octopus?  Everything is infused with magic and mystery until we are told that some things are real and some things are not.  Many children talk of “imaginary” friends or visions and are told they are just “pretend”. Once learned, children distinguish between the “real” and pretend worlds and no longer describe the imaginary as real, but what if – children’s perspectives are the true ones? Consider the wonderful possibility that before age 5 children are seeing and experiencing the magic of a light adult eyes can no longer see. What if there is a door to Narnia, winged creatures no bigger than your thumb, and animals that talk?  Couldn’t we all use a bit more of what we lost when we turned 5…
